The R107 280 SL was a luxury sports roadster produced between 1974 – 1985. The straight six twin cam produced an impressive 185bhp for its time and the cars were well advanced. This series 2 was built in the last 12 months of production and is offered for sale as a running and driving project car. Believed to be in current ownership since 2014, it had been enjoyed as a weekend toy for the lady owner up until 2016 at which point it was tucked away in a garage and has only been driven a handful of times since.

The later versions of the 280SL were fitted with an improved 4 speed gearbox and had a higher level of rust prevention compared with earlier cars. This Signal Red example features hounds tooth interior with wooden dash trim and includes its original hard top and soft top. The car is totally standard even with its factory radio.

Having been dry stored since 2016 the car remains in good overall condition but requires some recommissioning to be able to use it back on the road again. The engine runs and the gearbox appears to work, both would probably require a service. The paint has just been treated to a full polish and wax protection to bring the red paint back to life but the chrome bumpers do require replacing. The hard top is in good order as is the soft top with just one small tear. The electric windows are working but the indicators and heater fan requires some attention. There is also a vacuum leak on the pipe between the brake servo and inlet manifold. I do have a list of issues I have found whilst going over the car which I can offer to any interested party. Although there is some surface rust in places the main culprits of an SL rotting out present very well including the bulkhead, underside and sills.

Since pulling it out of the garage it was sat in, I have fitted a fresh battery, had it detailed, got the throttle linkage working where it was stuck shut, checked the fluids and unseized 3 brake calipers. It looks to have had a recent fuel pump as well. ¾ brake lines are now clamped so the car will need to be transported away not driven.

The sale includes current V5C showing 5 previous owners, it has its original Mercedes wallet with manuals including stamped service book. Last stamped at 57,000 miles. The car has been VIN checked and is clear. We have additional images available upon request. This car is sold on commission-based sale or return service on behalf of a private seller. Viewing by appointment only. We can assist with delivery and export if required.
